Candidate Statement

It’s a huge privilege to be asked to stand as your election candidate. I am supported by Dr Paul Monaghan MP, Ian Blackford MP, Dave Thompson MSP, Cabinet Secretary Alex Neil and broadcaster Lesley Riddoch but more importantly by many folk across the Highlands and Islands. I am a clinical pharmacist at New Craigs hospital in Inverness and live in Strathpeffer with my husband and three children. I come from Ullapool and have friends and family throughout the region - my mother is a native Gaelic speaker from Shawbost, Lewis. My work in mental health has enabled me to develop the skills needed to help and advocate for the most vulnerable in our society. I know what lack of housing means to families, I’m face to face with people who use food banks, I know what lack of transport means for getting folk and their services in and out of remote and rural areas. I’ve seen the difference access to good broadband can make and how it can benefit communities while severely restricting areas that don’t have it. I’ve experienced personally the difference good education can make. And of course health and the ability to stay in your own home with the support to do so into old age is a human right, not something we should be arguing over. I bring a wealth of experience from outside politics. I am active in our community as a Brownie leader, an antenatal teacher, and as a volunteer at the Ullapool Book Festival and Helmsdale Highland Games. As your MSP I will work tirelessly so that our region is at the forefront of policy decisions. We can ensure local employment is expanded in forestry, farming, crofting, fishing, responsible fish farming, tourism, energy, engineering and house building so that this is a growing, vibrant community - and of course to achieve our aim - Independence for Scotland. Please vote Maree Todd #1. Còmhla nì sinn Alba nas fheàrr. Dùrachdan. Together we can make Scotland better. Best wishes.
